The Nowhere Man is a figure shrouded in secrecy - a near legendary figure who helps those lucky few who are given the means to reach out to him. Before he was the Nowhere Man, Evan Smoak was a highly trained government operative known to a few as Orphan X. This is the story of Smoak's first outing as the Nowhere Man, where after completing a mission in Northern California, he happens to spot a young woman at a coffee shop. Brutalized and under the control of a very powerful, unscrupulous man, her life is in danger if she doesn't escape. And the only person that can help her do that is a man with the background and skills of the Nowhere Man.

I loved Orphan X, and was beyond excited to pre-order the Nowhere Man, and pick up this short story. That being said, this story was only 20 pages long, if that. Approximately 60 more pages were dedicated to the first few chapters of The Nowhere Man. Description wasn't very accurate in giving the length of the book. Hurwitz is a great writer, but this chapter isn't worth the $2. I'd rather see Amazon give a $2 credit to pre-ordering the next book of you also ordered this very short story.

Buy a Bullet An Orphan X Story (Audible Audio Edition) Gregg Hurwitz Scott Brick Brilliance Audio Books Reviews

Gregg Hurwitz' exceedingly short Buy a Bullet is a stripped down, bare bones description of Evan Smoak's first performance as the Nowhere Man. Quickly sizing up a situation of a young girl held hostage by a monomaniacal wealthy software tycoon, Evan wastes no time in addressing the situation in typical orphan X fashion. The major detriment is that it is over far too quickly. Coming on the heels of the orphan X debut, it has the appearance of a chapter originally left on the editor's desk in an attempt to keep the debut novel under a certain length. The tale has all the usual tradecraft and action associated with Evan, but abbreviated in the extreme.

One minor point the bulk of content is actually the beginning of the next book in the series with the actual short story on the order of a quarter of the total length. While, this is mentioned in the description, could do a better job of describing the actual contents in a bit more detail.
Evan Smoak is "Orphan X" and he is a very dangerous man.

In this short story, he plays knight errant in rescuing Leanne Lattimore from Silicon Valley tech billionaire Steve Radack. Radack is a sadist. Leanne desperately needs rescuing and Smoak is the man to do it.

The story focuses like a laser and moves like a wire-guided missile, as Evan intuits Leanne's need for rescue, scopes out the enemy, and moves into action. He has some "very particular skills" that are honed to the maximum. He knows weapons, close combat fighting and computer hacking. He has no apparent flaws and operates below the radar.

This story delivers on what it promises. It is action adventure, with a fair amount of wish-fulfillment. I was intrigued by the mysterious back story and not particularly interested in the loving descriptions of weaponry and tech, but, obviously, that is bread and butter for those who like action adventure stories of this kind. This is an easy and entertaining read.
I've read all of Gregg Hurwitz's Orphan X/Nowhere Man/Evan Smoak novels. I've found them to be a very entertaining and a well-conceived and executed take on the genre featuring 'loner' action-adventure-mystery-crime protagonists (e.g., Jason Bourne, Jack Reacher and Ethan Hunt). So, having discovered this short story, described as "Orphan X 1.5", I felt compelled to purchase this e-book, although my preference is always to have an actual book in my hand as opposed to using an e-reader. Since it's only available as an e-book, there is little choice but to purchase it in this format. While it's listed as a "short story", I had hoped for something more in the line of a novella/novelette since its length was listed in the description as 83 pages. While I found the story of Evan's first mission as the Nowhere Man to be up to Hurwitz's usual standards, I was disappointed to find that BAB ran for only 20-some odd pages and that the overwhelming majority of the e-book was a lengthy preview of "Nowhere Man" (which I had already read). I know, I know, I would have been aware of this if I had read any of the reviews. Unfortunately, I did NOT do so, as I wished to avoid 'spoilers'. Hence the 3 star score rather than the 5 stars which the story itself would otherwise merit.
Gregg Hurwitz introduced readers to ORPHAN X , Evan Smoak (2016 Super Hero) back in January 2016. Once an orphan, now a man with a dangerous past. A savior of the victims, the innocent ones—from corruption to sex slaves, while saving himself.
